Panic gripped residents of Oyingbo area in Lagos Mainland on Monday as a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours, leaving many occupants feared trapped under the rubble.

The incident occurred on Cote Street, where the building gave way suddenly, trapping an unknown number of residents inside. Emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), police, and Lagos State Fire Service rushed to the scene and are currently conducting intense search and rescue operations.

According to officials, at least 15 persons have so far been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and rushed to nearby hospitals, including the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, on Lagos Island. However, many more are still feared trapped as rescue efforts continue.

“This is an ongoing rescue involving a two-storey building previously identified as distressed before collapsing on its occupants,” an official statement noted.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crash in the early morning, followed by screams from those inside the structure. Search teams are using heavy equipment to clear debris while carefully looking for survivors.

Lagos has a history of building collapses, often attributed to substandard construction, poor enforcement of building regulations, and aging structures. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the cause of this latest incident.

Residents in the area have been urged to stay away from the site to allow emergency workers unimpeded access as operations remain active. Updates on the number of trapped individuals and possible casualties are expected as rescue efforts progress.
