“If you want us going forward, you must make sure things are done properly. Get the right people, people that have the same direction and thought, so when the players come back home to play, there is a good environment for them to play and perform.”

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has announced his interest in taking a leadership role within the Nigeria Football Federation, stressing that he would only step into such a position if it operates without corruption

.Mikel’s comments follow Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, a setback he believes highlights deeper structural problems within Nigerian football.

The 37 year old said the issues extend beyond the pitch and require a complete reset driven by integrity and accountability.

Mikel, who has long been vocal about his commitment to national service, said he has always prioritised Nigeria throughout his football career.

“One thing I have always done since my early days is fought for the country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, through the U17, U20, the senior national team.”

“Years of sacrifice. I have never for once said no to my country.”

He added that he remains ready to contribute, but only under the right conditions.

“When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But again, I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to do that if I am going to say yes.

“If you want us going forward, you must make sure things are done properly. Get the right people, people that have the same direction and thought, so when the players come back home to play, there is a good environment for them to play and perform.”

Beyond his playing career, Mikel has gained administrative experience. In July 2023, he was appointed Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, where he has contributed to sports development and strategic planning.

His leadership role, combined with his global football profile, has led many observers to view him as a potential reformist figure who could help reset Nigerian football governance.

FIFA Accuses UEFA of ‘Smear Campaign’ Against Infantino

FIFA has accused UEFA of launching a “smear campaign” against the organisation and its president, Gianni Infantino, in a sharp escalation of their dispute over a now-abandoned plan to sell a stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights.

In court filings submitted in the United States, FIFA described UEFA’s recent legal applications as “little more than press releases” designed to damage its leadership. UEFA had sought court orders in New York, Florida and Colorado for the disclosure of documents and testimony related to the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, which it said could support potential criminal proceedings in Switzerland.

The FFE plan, which aimed to sell around a 20% stake for approximately $4.2 billion to private investors, was withdrawn at the end of July after widespread opposition from UEFA and other confederations. UEFA has alleged mismanagement and questioned the valuation promoted by Infantino.

FIFA countered that the scheme was only a proposal that required democratic approval from member associations and the FIFA Council. It accused UEFA of refusing to engage in that process and instead pursuing a weeks-long public campaign against FIFA and its president.

• Messi’s successor, Cristian “Cuti” Romero

Cristian “Cuti” Romero has emerged as Argentina’s new main captain following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football, marking the beginning of a new leadership era for the world champions.

Romero, who previously served as the third-choice captain behind Messi and Nicolás Otamendi, has now been entrusted with the armband by both Argentina’s coaching staff and his fellow players.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender has long been regarded as one of the most influential voices within the Argentina dressing room, with his vocal leadership and uncompromising style making him a natural successor to Messi.

His promotion also reflects the growing importance of the defender to the national team since establishing himself as a key figure under head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Romero’s leadership credentials have previously received the backing of Messi, who praised the defender’s impact on Argentina’s defensive stability and described his contribution as “extraordinary”.

With Messi’s international retirement bringing an end to a 21-year Argentina career, Romero now faces the challenge of leading a team that has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years.

Under Scaloni, Argentina won the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America, with Messi at the heart of the team’s transformation from perennial underachievers to a dominant force in international football.

Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football after winning 207 caps for Argentina.

In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Messi wrote:“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all – not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.

“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team.

I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.”

The 39-year-old said after the death of his father, Jorge, this month that he had “quite a few doubts about whether I’m going to keep doing it for much longer”.
