UK Supreme Court to Rule on Nigerian Lawsuit Against Shell over Offshore Oil Spill
Lawyers representing 27,800 Nigerians living on the country’s southern coastline have tried to sue Shell over the impact of a 2011 offshore oil spill at the company’s giant Bonga oil field, but the courts have so far rejected their claims on the grounds that they brought them after the six-year deadline for launching legal action.
The Nigerians’ lawyers have also appealed to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which will deliver its ruling on whether the lawsuit should proceed or not.
