IR Iran hold New Zealand 2:2 in Los Angeles
New Zealand’s bid for a first World Cup victory rolls on to their next Group G assignment against Egypt on 21 June.
IR Iran denied New Zealand a first FIFA World Cup™ win after twice coming from behind to draw their Group G opener at Los Angeles Stadium.
After Mehdi Taremi tested Max Crocombe in a lively opening, Elijah Just went one better to give the All Whites the lead with a low, drilled finish.
Chris Wood was instrumental in the breakthrough goal and the big striker was at it again moments later as he found Sarpreet Singh, who forced an unconvincing save from Alireza Beiranvand.
Iran responded in kind through Taremi, whose 20-yard strike crashed against the upright before the first hydration break.
The pause seemed to work in favour of Amir Ghalenoei’s team, who returned with greater intent and quickly found an equaliser.
Ramin Rezaeian broke through the defensive line and calmly finished with the outside of his boot past Crocombe, bringing the score to 1-1.
New Zealand restored their advantage early in the second half when Wood released Just for a clipped finish over the advancing Beiranvand.
However, Iran weren’t behind for long.
Goalscorer Rezaeian turned provider, delivering an inch-perfect cross for Mohammad Mohebbi to power a header in off the inside of the post.
There was no separating the teams in the closing stages, with Wood heading straight at Beiranvand in added time.
New Zealand’s bid for a first World Cup victory rolls on to their next Group G assignment against Egypt on 21 June.
Iran, meanwhile, face Belgium, with all four sides locked on one point apiece after Matchday 1.

Osimhen plans to get a university degree
” Even though you dropped out due to some kind of challenges you have, it’s something you can always go back to. School is always there,” he said.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed his desire to return to school and earn a university degree after retiring from football.
In an Instablog TV interview now circulating on social media, the Galatasaray forward reflected on the lessons life has taught him since leaving school and explained why he hopes to continue his education.
As an adult, not everything I learned in school. There are some kinds of life lessons you encounter through life’s journey,” Osimhen said.
The 27-year-old noted that a football career is relatively short, making it important for players to prepare for life after retirement.
“For me, it would be an amazing thing to also try to get a degree, which I’m still considering because football, you won’t play for so long, probably 20, 25 years, and then you’re done.”
Osimhen said that while he has other opportunities to rely on after his playing days, earning a degree would be a personal achievement and an opportunity to inspire others.
He also encouraged young people who were forced to suspend their education due to financial or personal challenges, stressing that returning to school is always possible.
“Even though you dropped out due to some kind of challenges you have, it’s something you can always go back to. School is always there,” he said.

Colombia forward Campaz flees over death threats
The Colombian Football Federation has since condemned the threats against Campaz and called on the country’s Attorney General’s Office to investigate those responsible.
•Jaminton Campaz
Colombia forward Jaminton Campaz has reportedly gone into hiding after receiving death threats following his team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The threats have revived memories of the killing of Andrés Escobar, who was shot dead in Medellin days after scoring an own goal during Colombia’s 1994 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States.
Campaz blazed an open chance over the crossbar in the final six minutes of extra time in the round of 16 game against Switzerland on July 7, with the game ending goalless after 120 minutes. Switzerland eventually progressed with a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout, ending Colombia’s World Cup campaign.
According to the New York Post, the 26 year old did not travel back to Bogotá with teammates James Rodríguez, Davinson Sánchez and Juan Fernando Quintero, as his whereabouts remain unknown, although speculation suggests he may have travelled to Argentina, where he plays for Rosario Central.
Amid growing concern over his safety, the Colombian international broke his silence in an emotional message posted on Instagram on Friday, urging fans to reject hatred and violence.
“My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may think differently or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear,” he wrote in Spanish translated to English.
Campaz said representing Colombia at the World Cup had fulfilled a lifelong dream despite the team’s painful exit.
“Since I was a child, I dreamed of defending Colombia’s colours, hearing the anthem, representing millions of people and scoring a goal at a World Cup. Today, I can only thank God for allowing me to fulfil that dream,” he said.
“I deeply regret not being able to bring you the joy we all hoped for, but I want you to know there was never a lack of dedication, commitment or love for this jersey. I gave everything I had on the pitch, and I would do it a thousand times over for my country.
According to the Athletic, the Colombian Football Federation has since condemned the threats against Campaz and called on the country’s Attorney General’s Office to investigate those responsible.

Who Will Win The 23rd FIFA World Cup? (France, Spain, England or Argentina)
With the quarter-finals settled, we now know for certain that the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup™ will not see a first-time winner.
With Argentina, France, Spain and England making it into the semis, here are the four potential finals.
So it comes down to France, Spain, England or Argentina.
With the quarter-finals settled, we now know for certain that the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup™ will not see a first-time winner.
The trophy could go to England or Spain, both of whom are looking to add a second star to their crest; France, who seek to become three-time champions; or Argentina who could be the first team since 1962 to retain the trophy and claim their fourth triumph overall.
Each of them has a major challenge to overcome ahead of a date with destiny at New York New Jersey stadium on 19 July, but we now have a clearer picture of how the final might shape up.
There are four possible fixtures – a mouth-watering cross-Channel clash between England and France, a repeat of the incredible final at Qatar 2022, an exciting rerun of the EURO 2024 final, or a clash between the holders of the World Cup and the European Championship.
France vs England
If Kylian Mbappe and Les Bleus overcome Spain and Thomas Tuchel’s side defeat Argentina, New York New Jersey stadium will play host to a first World Cup final between these two European titans.
The Three Lions have only reached the final once, when they took on West Germany on home soil in 1966, beating them 4-2 after extra time.
France, meanwhile, could secure a third consecutive final berth after 2018 and 2022.It would be a tie that pits team-mates from two of the world’s biggest clubs against each other for one unforgettable evening.
Real Madrid stars Mbappe and Jude Bellingham would cross swords for a chance to lift the glittering trophy, while Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Michael Olise would also be on opposing sides.
England would also be keen for revenge against a France side that knocked them out of the Qatar 2022™ tournament in the quarter-finals.
France vs Argentina
This match would mark a repeat of the thrilling final of Qatar 2022™, a contest that many have been hoping to see play out all over again.
Three and a half years since the Albiceleste got the better of France on penalties after a 3-3 draw at Lusail Stadium, the two sides could once again do battle to win football’s biggest prize. Les Bleus would be looking for payback against the opponents who handed them such a bitter defeat, while Argentina’s goal would be to add a fourth star to their crest and become the first team to retain the trophy since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
Regardless of the result, this would be a mouth-watering encounter between Mbappe and Lionel Messi, the tournament’s joint-top scorers on eight goals apiece.
Looking back a little bit further, the game would not only be a rematch of the 2022 final, but the decider in a best-of-three series. Four years before the epic final in Qatar, a France side inspired by a teenage Mbappe beat Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16 at Russia 2018™ on their way to lifting the trophy.
Spain vs England
If Spain overcome France and England get past Argentina, the World Cup 2026 final would be a rematch of the UEFA EURO 2024 showpiece. Two years after La Roja claimed a 2-1 win over the Three Lions in the final of EURO 2024, Harry Kane and co. would have the chance to get revenge.
England and Spain have only reached the final once, in 1966 and 2010 respectively, both going on to lift the trophy.A World Cup match between the two would be a rare event in and of itself. While these European giants have clashed several times in continental competitions, they have only ever come up against each other twice at the World Cup.
They first met in Brazil in 1950, with La Roja enjoying a 1-0 victory in the group stage. More than three decades later they met in 1982 and played out a goalless draw which meant both teams were eliminated from the second group stage.Forty four years later, a meeting in a World Cup final could be on the cards.
Spain vs Argentina
If Spain and Argentina clear the last hurdle on the road to New York New Jersey, we would be witnessing an all-Spanish-speaking final, and one which has been a rare occasion at the World Cup, but not without precedent.
If it does come down to La Roja and La Albiceleste, it would be the first clash between the two since the group stage of the 1966 tournament in England, when the South Americans won 2-1.
Another major appeal of the tie is that it would be the first ever World Cup final to be contested by the champions of Europe and the champions of the world.
Should Spain triumph, they would draw level with France and Uruguay on two titles, while an Argentine victory would be their fourth, and put them on par with Germany and Italy, and one behind Brazil.
Another dimension to this potential tie would be that it would bring together two superstars from different generations in Messi and Lamine Yamal on different sides.
