NAF strike kills notorious bandit kingpins, 20 others in Zamfara

Airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft have killed two bandits kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga, including 20 of their fighters in Zamfara State.
The bandits were killed in their hideouts at Unguwar Goga hillforest in Faskari Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, said the “precision airstrikes were executed in early hours of March 13, after careful and actionable intelligence.”
The statement reads: “ The strike advancing purposeful lethality, destroyed the fortified camps of notorious bandit kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga, neutralising over 20 criminals, with additional casualties reported in the surrounding rocky hills.
“The airstrike had a decisive impact on the criminals, assessment of the full extent of the damage is ongoing.”
Riga and Gero, according to the statement, were key enablers of banditry, sheltering terrorist elements responsible for relentless ambushes along the Funtua-Gusau Road, particularly between Yankara and Sheme villages.
“Their elimination marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing military campaign to restore peace in the North-West,” the statement said.

Nnamdi Kanu’s trial to start afresh March 21, identity of new judge revealed

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, will appear before a new judge, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court on March 21, 2025 in Abuja.
Kanu’s lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, said the legal team is primed and ready.
Ejimakor, however, disclosed that Kanu’s legal team has not been served with the charges he would face before Justice Omotosho.
Kanu has been facing charges over his pursuit for the actualization of Biafra.
Meanwhile, in September 2024, Kanu had challenged Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja to recuse herself from his trial.
Following his call, Justice Nyako recused herself but the Chief Judge of the Abuja Federal High Court rejected her decision.
In December, Justice Nyako adjourned Kanu’s case indefinitely.
Against this backdrop, Kanu vowed never to appear in court until an impartial judge is appointed to preside over his case.
Ejimakor said: “It’s now official that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu shall appear before a new Judge on 21st March 2025.
It’s a milestone; and we are primed & ready.“He will appear before Justice James Omotosho of Federal High Court in court 7.
“The case will start new like it has never held before. Everything that was done from 2015 when he was arrested to the last time that he appeared before Justice Binta Nyako are gone including the appeals that are pending, they are gone out of the window.
“He would be rearraigned on charges that we have not seen, we can mention that we received a hearing notice but no charges have been sent to us.
“We really don’t know the charges we are facing on March 24. The government has a trick they always do, they will serve you a day before the hearing so that you don’t have time to study the charges.
“Sometimes they serve you will you are in court but the charges would have been in the court registry and we can’t start asking the court to give us copy.”

The GOC, represented by the Deputy Theater Commander, Brig. Gen. A.L. Akpodu explained that the civilians were rescued during a clearance operation conducted by the 21 Special Armored Brigade and the 199 Special Forces Battalion under Operation Desert Sanity IV in Sambisa Forest.
“As part of our ongoing clearance efforts, troops of the 21 Special Armored Brigade and the 199 Special Forces Battalion recently carried out successful offensive operations in Sambisa Forest,” he said.
“Key terrorist enclaves in Ukuba, Ujimla, Sabil Huda, Garin, Fajula, and Gobara were cleared, leading to the rescue of 75 civilians, including seven adult males, 34 women, and 34 children,” he added.
He further noted that the military destroyed several insurgent facilities during the operation.
“The operation significantly degraded enemy capabilities by neutralising insurgents and destroying command and logistics bases, makeshift shelters, weapon caches, and IED-making materials,” he said.
The rescued civilians have received medical and psychological support and are now set to be handed over to the Borno State government.
Receiving the victims on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, commended the troops for their gallantry in the fight against insurgency.
“We are taking them to our rehabilitation centre, where they will receive livelihood support, counseling services, mental health and psychosocial support, and educational services for the children.
We will ensure they are well reintegrated before releasing them back into society,” she said.
