Peter Obi dispels arrest rumours, says he’s in Onitsha

Peter Obi has dispelled the rumour of his arrest, saying he is currently at his Onitsha residence in Anambra State.

This followed the death threat allegation and counter allegation between him and Felix Morka, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement posted via his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Obi called on his supporter to ignore the rumour of his alleged arrest, saying the claim is entirely false. The recurring fake News on me.

I have been made aware of a circulating fake News about my alleged arrest.

Let me state unequivocally that these claims are entirely false. I am currently at my home in Onitsha. Anambra State. Such fake News on my person has become a pastime for some people,” he tweeted.

The former Governor of Anambra State recalled that similar rumour was amplified in 2024, when he was said to have arrested by officials of the DSS.

He said, “Recall last year September, when I was in Rwanda, similar lies had gone out that DSS invaded my house; now, while I was in my home in Onitsha, Anambra State, they said I was arrested in Abuja.

The motive of these peddlers cannot be positive but let us not allow baseless rumors to distract us from the critical challenges we face as a nation.”

All Delta State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, House of Representatives members have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Their defection was made public by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary on Tuesday.

Recall that former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, had dumped the PDP for the APC.

Oborevwori and Okowa announced their defection during a stakeholders meeting in Asaba, Delta State.

Following their defections, the House of Representatives member from Ideato Federal constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, had disclosed that two more state governors and 40 lawmakers on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will soon defect.

However, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had said the PDP would be repositioned despite the defections, stressing that those who want to defect are free to leave.

A National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy, will hold on May, 28, and 29.

The proposed national summit, initiated by The Patriots in collaboration with the Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG), is aimed at facilitating broad national consensus on the most suitable and inclusive governance system for Nigeria.

The members of the Convening/Coordinating Committee, Inaugurated yesterday, includes former governors, Chief Gbenga Daniel (Ogun State), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State), former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; publisher, African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, publishers of the Tribune titles, Ambassador (Dr) Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, and other eminent Nigerians.

The event, chaired by a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, marked the formal commencement of preparations for the National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Anyaoku, who remains a towering figure in national and global diplomacy at the age of 92, set the tone for what many see as a crucial national dialogue.

He declared that Nigeria’s current constitutional arrangement, anchored on the 1999 Constitution (as amended), remains fundamentally flawed and ill-suited for a pluralistic society like Nigeria.

“We believe we can use this summit to achieve the making of a constitution that will serve this pluralistic country better.

The 1999 Constitution, however amended, cannot serve Nigeria well,” Anyaoku said.He argued passionately for the return to a truly federal constitution reminiscent of Nigeria’s early independence years (1960–1966), a period he recalled as one of more effective governance, regional progress, and national cohesion.

That federal system, he noted, allowed Nigeria to flourish before the advent of military rule.”
