Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party leader Peter Obi has sparked fresh speculation about his political future, declaring that he may not be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential poll, suggested that age and health concerns could prevent him from throwing his hat into the ring again.
“I might not be alive to contest,” Obi reportedly said during a recent interaction with supporters and journalists. The remark, though delivered calmly, has triggered intense reactions across social media and political circles, with many interpreting it as a hint that the 66-year-old politician might opt out of the next presidential race.
Obi, widely admired for his frugal lifestyle and emphasis on good governance, has remained a vocal critic of the current administration’s economic policies. He has continued to tour parts of the country, addressing issues ranging from insecurity to youth unemployment. However, he has not formally declared his intention to run in 2027.
Political analysts say the statement could be Obi’s way of managing expectations while keeping his options open. “This is classic Peter Obi — honest, reflective, and strategic,” said one political commentator. “He’s signaling that leadership is not about personal ambition but about the survival and progress of the nation.”
Supporters of the former governor expressed concern over the comment, with many urging him to prioritize his health while reaffirming their loyalty. Others see it as a call for younger leaders to step forward within the Labour Party or broader opposition movement.
As the 2027 election cycle begins to heat up, all eyes remain on Obi and other major political figures. Whether his latest remark signals a permanent exit from presidential contests or merely a moment of candour remains to be seen.
The Presidency and other leading political parties have yet to respond officially to Obi’s statement.
Tragedy has struck the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kogi State following the sudden death of the party chairman in Ijumu Local Government Area, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon.
Solomon reportedly slumped and died on Friday while attending a peace and reconciliation meeting at the Iyara Town Hall, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Sources at the meeting said proceedings were ongoing when the party chairman suddenly collapsed, throwing political leaders and delegates into panic and confusion.
He was immediately given first aid and rushed to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Solomon’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Kogi West, coming at a time when the APC is intensifying efforts to reconcile members and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC state executive and local authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The Presidency on released a list of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, with President Bola Tinubu as Chairman While vice President Kashim Shettima and the Party Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda will serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively..
The list was released in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy).
The former Zamfara State governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari will serve as the director-general of the campaign. Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as secretary of the campaign council. APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru and Hadiza Bala-Usman will serve as deputy and assistant secretaries.
Onanuga said that the chairman of the campaign Council, President Tinubu, will work with a body of advisers comprising Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Osoba, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa.
The Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abass, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State have been assigned as deputy director-generals for the campaign in the south and the north.
