Wike’s wife elevated to Appeal Court bench, CJN’s daughter-in-law to FCT High Court

Amid protests from various civil society organizations and individuals, the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended Justice Nyesom-Wike Eberechi Suzzette, wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for elevation to the Court of Appeal. Additionally, Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria, daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, was nominated for appointment as a Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory at a meeting presided over by her father-in-law.
Justice Ariwoola is set to retire from the judiciary in August this year. During the NJC meeting, two judges, Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court and Justice G. B. Brikins-Okolosi of Delta State High Court, were barred from elevation to the Appeal Court for two and three years respectively and received warning letters for misconduct. Justice Ekwo was penalized for abusing discretionary power by wrongly granting an ex-parte order, while Justice Brikins-Okolosi was cited for failing to deliver a judgment within the stipulated period.
Justice Amina Shehu of Yobe State High Court was also cautioned for improperly issuing a Writ of Possession conferring title on a defendant. The NJC reviewed 35 petitions against various judges, dismissing many for lack of merit, and set up eight committees to further investigate petitions deemed meritorious.
During the meeting, the NJC recommended 86 judicial officers for appointments across the Court of Appeal, High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Sharia Courts of Appeal, and Customary Courts of Appeal of various states. This includes 22 high court judges being moved to the Court of Appeal, 12 nominees for the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, and numerous other judicial appointments across Nigeria.
The NJC also received notifications of retirements, including that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the deaths of three judges. All recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in following the approval of the NJC’s recommendations by the President and their respective state governors.
