JUST IN: Abacha’s family rejects Babangida’s claim on June 12 election annulment
The family lamented that “A Journey in Service” failed to provide an accurate and objective historical account, asserting that a fair evaluation of history requires integrity and honesty—virtues they claimed the author lacked. “

The family of the late General Sani Abacha has publicly challenged claims made by former military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) in his book “A Journey in Service,” which alleged that the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election was the fault of General Abacha.
In a statement issued by Mohammed Abacha, the family insisted that the decision for the annulment was solely under Babangida’s administration, emphasizing that during his time as Head of State, he had complete executive power and was fully responsible for his government’s actions.
The Abacha family decried any attempts to ascribe blame to General Abacha as a deliberate distortion of historical facts.
They urged Nigerians to be cautious of revisionist narratives that could manipulate public opinion for personal or political gain, stressing that their father’s legacy should not be tarnished by unfounded accusations aimed at deflecting responsibility from those truly accountable.
Additionally, the family highlighted General Sani Abacha’s loyalty and friendship with Babangida, asserting that it was Abacha who provided protection during times of threat to Babangida’s life.
They expressed gratitude to Nigerians who have defended General Abacha and strive to uphold the truth regarding this period in Nigeria’s history.
The statement lamented that “A Journey in Service” failed to provide an accurate and objective historical account, asserting that a fair evaluation of history requires integrity and honesty—virtues they claimed the author lacked.
Ultimately, the family reaffirmed the importance of recognizing General Abacha’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, underscoring that he, like other leaders, remains an integral part of the country’s history.
