FG Launches Gender Strategy to Boost Dairy, Empower 37K Women & Youth
The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s dairy sector through gender-responsive policies and programmes designed to create greater opportunities for women and young people.
This commitment was highlighted during the 2026 World Milk Day press briefing and road walk held in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Senior Special Assistant Professor Eustace Iyayi said that the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has strengthened efforts to modernise the livestock and dairy industries.
The Minister revealed that a key achievement was the validation of the National Dairy Policy Implementation Framework after extensive stakeholder consultations in November 2025.
The framework, scheduled for official unveiling on June 1, 2026, is expected to provide a practical roadmap for achieving Nigeria’s dairy development goals.
He further disclosed that the Ministry is scaling up investments under the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) in areas such as feed and fodder production, animal healthcare, genetic improvement, dairy hubs, milk collection centres, cold-chain facilities and climate-smart livestock systems to increase local milk production.
Maiha also announced plans for a Women and Youth in Livestock Empowerment Initiative, which aims to benefit about 37,000 women and youths through skills acquisition, access to finance, technology transfer, cooperative development and improved market opportunities across the livestock value chain.
Stakeholders at the event, including representatives of government agencies, development partners, industry groups and private investors, pledged continued support for dairy sector growth.
They described the 2026 World Milk Day theme, “Celebrating Women Farmers,” as recognition of the vital role women play in dairy production, food security, nutrition and rural economic development.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has commenced nationwide capacity-building exercise to prepare installers for the rollout of the country’s renewed Digital Switchover (DSO) programme.
The Head of the DSO Unit and Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Commission, Mrs. Clementine Usman-Wamba, announced the development during training of more than 50 set-top box installers and technicians in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to her, broadcasters would be shut out of analogue broadcasting transmission by 2028, hence the need for the training of installers that are professionals to assist in the process.
She said, “We are actually here in Ibadan to train installers specifically to be part of the Digital Switch Over process.We are doing it in conjunction with Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited, (NigComSat). It is a joint outreach that we are doing here today.”

She said that the installation of Free TV is to enable Nigerians to have access to many channels without subscription, noting that the NBC has embarked on the training of the installers of decoders and dishes nationwide for effective take off of the project.

Authority blames Jigawa boat capsize on overloading, buried dead victims
The accident happened at about 1pm on Sunday when a canoe carrying between 30 and 40 passengers capsized while crossing the river
The Jigawa State Government has confirmed the recovery of six bodies following a boat mishap in Malamawar Yan Dutse community, Ringim Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Auwalu Sankara, confirmed the incident during a visit to the community.
Sankara said that the accident happened at about 1pm on Sunday when a canoe carrying between 30 and 40 passengers capsized while crossing the river.
He attributed the accident to overloading, saying the number of passengers exceeded the canoe’s capacity.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to locate the remaining missing passengers, while the recovered victims would be buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
