Another Nigerian Killed While Fighting for Russian Forces in Ukraine War
Ukrainian military intelligence has reported the elimination of another Nigerian national, Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, who was fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), the 34-year-old Nigerian was killed in combat operations near the settlement of Hrafske in the Kharkiv region. Victor, born on April 28, 1992, hailed from Ilutitun in Ondo State, Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Victor signed a mercenary contract with the Russian army in late February 2026 — shortly after the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong warning to citizens against illegal recruitment into foreign conflicts. Despite the advisory, he was allegedly lured with promises of employment and “easy money,” given minimal training, and deployed to the front lines.
This latest incident brings to light the continued recruitment of Nigerians into Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, with Ukrainian sources claiming that dozens have already been killed in the war.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly cautioned its citizens against participating in the Russia-Ukraine war, describing such engagements as illegal and highly risky. Families of affected individuals have expressed concerns over deceptive recruitment practices targeting young Nigerians seeking better economic opportunities abroad.
This development comes amid broader reports of African nationals being drawn into the conflict under false pretenses, highlighting ongoing diplomatic and humanitarian issues surrounding foreign fighters in the war.
