Olakulehin cleared to become Olubadan
Oba Owolabi Olakulehin’s nomination as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland is currently awaiting approval from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. According to Segun Olayiwola, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Olakulehin’s nomination has successfully passed through all the necessary stages except for the final approval by the governor.
Governor Makinde, who has been overseas since last month, is expected to return soon. Upon his return, he is anticipated to review and approve Olakulehin’s nomination. Olakulehin, an 88-year-old prominent businessman, politician, and the current Balogun of Ibadanland, is set to succeed the late Oba Lekan Balogun, who passed away two months ago.
Recently, a government delegation, which included the Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council Chief Ayorinde (SAN), Commissioner Olayiwola, and council member Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, visited Olakulehin. They conveyed the governor’s congratulatory message and assured him of Makinde’s high regard. This visit also served to verify Olakulehin’s health, a critical factor for his approval as stipulated in the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.
Speculations about Olakulehin’s health have circulated, with some questioning his fitness for the demanding role of Olubadan. However, the delegation’s visit confirmed that Olakulehin is in good health, suggesting that Governor Makinde will likely proceed with the approval without delay upon his return.
Currently, Olakulehin’s nomination file remains with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs until the governor is back in the country to take the necessary action.
