JUST IN: Gunshots Fired As Angry Inmates Protest Food Ration At Jos Correctional Centre
Inmates at the Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau State protested on Friday over the plan to reduce their food ration.
They expressed dissatisfaction over the decision, a situation that forced the prison authorities to fire tear gas canisters and gunshots into the air to bring the situation under control.
Sources at the correctional centre indicated that the contractor in charge of food supply to the centre had complained to the authority about the high cost of food items, especially rice which is a stable menu of the inmates will have to be adjusted from four times to twice in a week and will be substituted by either grains or garri.
This decision seemed not to go down well with the inmates as they expressed their grievances on Friday during a routine briefing by the official in charge.
Confirming the incident to journalists at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Jos, the Controller of Corrections Plateau State Command, Raphael Ibinuhi, stated that tear gas canisters and firing shots in the air were applied to disperse the unruly inmates when they refused to return to their cells.
“By the time the inmates were called this morning for briefing, they were not happy that the period for consumption of rice has been reduced from four times to two in a week and expressed dissatisfaction on the development,” Ibinuhi said.
“I instructed the officer in charge to return them to their cells but instead they became violent and started throwing stones at the personnel. In response and to keep the situation from getting out of hand, we have to resort to firing tear gas canisters and gunshots which enable the handsmen to return the inmates to the cells. Some of the personnel sustained minor injuries from the stones thrown at them but no inmates were injured during as the situation was brought under control.”
The Jos Custodial Centre has 1,064 inmates comprising 1,035 males and 19 females. Of the figure, those awaiting trial are made up of 647 males and 14 females. While convicted inmates consist of 205 males and four female, inmates on death roll are 131.
Following the rising cost of living in the country, many Nigerians have demonstrated, asking the Federal Government to ameliorate their pains.
President Bola Tinubu has called for patience, saying there are benefits of his economic policies in the long term. He however condemned Monday’s nationwide protests embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), describing it as unacceptable.
“Allow me to throw a jab here. The Labour Union should understand that no matter how much we cling to our freedom and rights, to call for a strike within nine months of an administration is unacceptable,” Tinubu said in Lagos while commissioning the Lagos Red Line Train connecting Agbado to Oyingbo.

A delegation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) , led by its Executive Secretary, Mrs. Evbu Igbinedion, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun for the notable strides in enhancing swift justice delivery across the country
The ACJMC gave the commendation today, 26th June 2025, during a visit to the IGP at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.
In a statement with Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/457 Dated June 26, 2025 , ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO Force Headquarters Abuja, disclosed that the delegation included prominent stakeholders in the legal and justice sector such as the Director – General of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Mr. Aliyu Abubakar, and the Director of Civil and Political Rights from the National Human Rights Commission, among others.
During the meeting, the committee applauded the IGP for his progressive reforms and proactive leadership, which have significantly improved the capacity and performance of the Police within the criminal justice system.
In their remarks, the committee emphasised the central role of the Nigeria Police Force as the critical entry point to the criminal justice system, acknowledging the numerous operational challenges the Force continues to face.
They highlighted the need for sustained reform, inter-agency collaboration, and the protection of citizens’ rights, especially during arrests and investigations.
One of the key appeals presented by the committee was the resuscitation of the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) — a program enshrined in Force Order 20 and supported by Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The PDSS is designed to ensure that every arrested or accused person receives prompt legal representation from the point of arrest through the investigation process, thereby reinforcing the right to a fair hearing and safeguarding against abuse.
In response, the IGP appreciated the visit and recognised the significance of such engagements in strengthening collaboration for efficient justice delivery. The IGP further affirmed that the Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to upholding its constitutional and legal responsibilities, especially in respect to human rights protection and accountability, and assured the committee of the Force’s readiness to collaborate on its mandate, pledging the continual training and capacity building for officers to embed human rights principles into everyday policing practices.
The IGP reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and rights violations by its personnel, affirming that the current leadership of the Force is dedicated to building a professionally competent, citizen-focused police service that delivers on its core mandate of ensuring public safety, justice, and the rule of law.
The High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the gruesome murder of a National Youth Service Corps member, Salome Adaidu.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of culpable homicide, having killed and dismembered the victim.
Ajayi was convicted on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria and punishable by death.

The Lagos State enforcement squad of the MOE&WR led by KAI operatives on Wednesday burst an illegal abbatoir which was being operated at a private residence at Succo road directly opposite the RRS Barracks and LASTMA Yard in Oko Oba, Agege, arresting some of those found slaughtering animals for public consumption in the location.
The operation followed a tip-off from a whistle blower.
“The enforcement team said, the contaminated meat from cows and goats have been confiscated to prevent it from entering the food chain”.
