El-Rufai: One-term presidency Not Enough
El-Rufai emphasized that four years is not enough and politicians who make such pledges often change their minds once they assume office.

Nasir El-Rufai, a former Kaduna State Governor, says that four years is not sufficient to deliver meaningful reforms.
He, therefore, urged former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and his ex-Anambra State counterpart, Peter Obi, to desist from making one-term presidency pledges.
Recalled that Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has consistently said he would serve only one term if elected president in 2027, insisting that four years is enough to reset Nigeria.
Obi also argued that history shows purposeful leadership is defined by impact, not tenure length.
Similarly, Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation and now a member of the African Democratic Congress, said he would be willing to serve just one term if he secures his party’s presidential ticket.
He stated that he would step down after four years to promote rotation and stability.
Reacting to these claims, El-Rufai dismissed the idea, noting that both men, having governed their respective states, should know that four years is not sufficient to deliver meaningful reforms.
“Now, on the question of people coming out and saying, I will do one term, I don’t think anyone believes that.“I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours. And frankly, as someone who has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government.
El-Rufai emphasized that four years is not enough and politicians who make such pledges often change their minds once they assume office.
“So, I want to appeal to everyone to stop making these commitments of ‘I will do four years’ or ‘I will do eight years’, because nobody believes you,” he added.
El-Rufai also explained that his support for power shift to the South in the 2023 election stemmed from an agreement reached by leaders of the All Progressives Congress during the party’s formation.
Tragedy has struck the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kogi State following the sudden death of the party chairman in Ijumu Local Government Area, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon.
Solomon reportedly slumped and died on Friday while attending a peace and reconciliation meeting at the Iyara Town Hall, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Sources at the meeting said proceedings were ongoing when the party chairman suddenly collapsed, throwing political leaders and delegates into panic and confusion.
He was immediately given first aid and rushed to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Solomon’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Kogi West, coming at a time when the APC is intensifying efforts to reconcile members and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC state executive and local authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The Presidency on released a list of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, with President Bola Tinubu as Chairman While vice President Kashim Shettima and the Party Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda will serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively..
The list was released in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy).
The former Zamfara State governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari will serve as the director-general of the campaign. Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as secretary of the campaign council. APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru and Hadiza Bala-Usman will serve as deputy and assistant secretaries.
Onanuga said that the chairman of the campaign Council, President Tinubu, will work with a body of advisers comprising Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Osoba, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa.
The Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abass, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State have been assigned as deputy director-generals for the campaign in the south and the north.
