UNICAL@50: Betta Edu, Senate President, Reps Deputy Speaker, C’River Gov.,others Awarded

…..Grand Ambassadors of University of Calabar, inducted into Hall of Fame.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of its establishment, the University of Calabar,the prestigious institution thursday evening honoured a number of eminent Nigerians including Dr Betta Edu, President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of the Representatives, Rt.Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu and Cross River state Governor, Senator Bassey Otu among others.

They were awarded with the Grand Ambassadors and Legacy Face of the University. They were also permanently inducted into the University Hall of Fame.

Speaking shortly after she was conferred with the Award, Dr Edu thanked the University’s management for finding her worthy of the recognition, describing it as “incredible honour” and pledged to continue to be a good Ambassador of the University.

She also paid glowing tribute to President Bola Tinubu “for his support and fatherly guidance”Her words: “Thank you to the University’s esteemed Management and staff for this incredible honour. I am truly humbled to receive this award, and I am grateful for the recognition in the hall of fame.

“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to my golden Vice Chancellor and her team , the Student Union Government and my lecturers who have always supported me throughout my journey, and built leadership foundation for my public service.

“I am completely overwhelmed with gratitude and joy,this award is not just a recognition of my own efforts, but also a testament to the far that more responsibilities have been given to me with far reaching impact in Nigeria and the globe.

Speaking further, Dr Betta Edu paid special tribute to Unical, describing the institution as “my very powerful University that actually built the leadership skills in me””To support the school’s infrastructural projects, Edu announced that “the Class 2009 of the Medical school will be contributing to the completion and equipping of the new medical center for University of Calabar and we will be doing that by supporting initially with N15 million Naira.

They have asked me to make this pledge on their behalf.Ealier in her welcome address, Professor Obi recounted the journey of Unical from its days as the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and when it took off in 1975 as a full fledged university, and described the journey as ” 50 years of resilience, 50 years of impactful knowledge and service to humanity.

“We are very proud to have the Senate President of Nigeria as one of us. We are proud to have deputy speaker of the house of reps, the governor of Cross River state, Minister, senators and indeed the deputy governor Cross River State, we are very proud of My daughter, Doctor Betta Edu for always making the University proud, she added.

Isah Miqdad, Radda’s former aide on digital media, announced the sad news via his known X handle on Sunday morning, March 23.

JUST IN: Gunmen abduct DHQ official, two others in Abuja, demand N100m ransom

Gunmen have abducted a Nigerian Navy officer attached to the Defence Headquarters, Lt. Cynthia Akor, along with two others in Abuja.

The victims were kidnapped from their residence in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday night.

A resident in the area said the kidnappers have contacted the families of the hostages, demanding a ransom of N100 million for their release.

“Among the three people that were kidnapped on Friday night in the Mpape area is a DHQ official, Akor.

“The kidnappers have already reached out to their families and are demanding N100m ransom,” the resident said.

Efforts to reach the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, and the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, were unsuccessful, as they had yet to respond to messages as of the time of filing this report.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Josephine Adeh, said she would confirm the incident and provide further details.

“I will confirm and get back to you shortly,” she simply stated.

She has not reverted as of the time of filing this report.

JUST IN: WAEC releases 2025 computer-based WASSCE results for private candidates

The West African Examinations Council has released the results of the 2025 Computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates.

In a post obtained from its X handle on Saturday, the examination body said, “The results of the Computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2025-First Series have been released.

”Reacting to the developments, some students lamented inability to check their results.

An X user with the name Ephrata said, ” I checked mine now they’re saying my card has been used by another candidate.

And this my first time of using it. Why is that? I bought scratch card same thing. Please I want you to reply me and tell me what wrong with it, so I can make the next steps.”

Another user with X account registered under endowedToBad, said “My student has not been able to check Nov/Dec 2024 result till now.

”Another X user called Bigname said, “Good morning, please I’m trying to re download my photo card so as to check my result pin but it’s saying that registration is not allowed this period while another X user named Trillions shared a screenshot of the negative response he got trying to check his result online.
