Yuletide: LAWMA vows to tackle waste surge

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has restated its readiness to ensure a clean and sustainable environment during Christmas and New Year festivities.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, in a statement on Friday in Lagos, said that although there would be increase in waste generation during the period, the agency would leave no stone un-turned in ensuring a clean environment.
“We are anticipating a 100 per cent increase in waste generation during Christmas and New Year festivities, but we are determined to leave no stone un-turned in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for Lagosians to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones,” Gbadegesin said.
The managing director outlined LAWMA’s sanitation approaches for the period.
He said the approaches included intensified street and highway sanitation, effective operations by Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators backed by LAWMA’s own fleet, and publication of phone numbers for residents to report waste management issues.
“To handle the expected waste surge, LAWMA has ramped up efforts on street and highway sanitation across the state.
” PSP operators responsible for waste collection in specific areas have been mandated to deliver efficient services, with LAWMA providing additional backup trucks where needed.
“We have also released dedicated lines on our social media handles (@lawma_gov on Twitter and Instagram, as well as @lawma.gov on Facebook for residents to report any infractions,” Gbadegesin said.
The managing director also said that the agency would distribute trash bags during the celebrations to enable residents to containerise their waste for seamless evacuation by assigned PSP operators.
He appealed to motorists to drive with caution to safeguard the lives of sanitation workers (street sweepers) and other service providers.
While wishing Lagosians merry Christmas and New Year celebrations, Gbadegesin admonished them to shun indiscriminate waste disposal.

Nigeria’s Military Capture top Ansaru, Mahmuda terrorist group leaders

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, declared today Nigeria’s security forces capture two top leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Nigeria, following a months-long counter-terrorism operation.
Ribadu, at a press briefing held at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja, said that those arrested are Mahmud Muhammad Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, Abbas or Mukhtar, identified as the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, also known as Mallam Mamuda.
Ribadu said the intelligence-led operation was carried out between May and July 2025 in collaboration with security and intelligence agencies.
According to Ribadu, Abu Bara coordinated terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and masterminded high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies to finance terrorism.
He added that his deputy, Mamuda, led the “Mahmudawa” cell around Kainji National Park and trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadist instructors.
Ribadu said, “The targeted operation, which was conducted between May and July 2025, led to the capture of two top ANSARU leaders who have been responsible for masterminding several terrorist attacks against Nigeria over the past years.
The first is Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar), the self-styled Emir of ANSARU.
He is the coordinator of various terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria. He is also the mastermind of several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism over the years.“
The second is Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda), Abu Bara’s proclaimed Chief of Staff and Deputy.
He is the leader of the so-called “Mahmudawa” cell hiding out in and around the Kainji National Park, straddling Niger and Kwara States up to the Benin Republic.
Mamuda trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specialising in weapons handling and IED fabrication.
