UPDATE: Amnesty Hails Court Order Stopping NBC Sanctions on Broadcasters
Amnesty International Nigeria has welcomed a Federal High Court ruling that restrains the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) from enforcing its controversial sanctions against broadcasters, describing the decision as a significant victory for freedom of expression and media independence.
The organisation made the commendation in a statement on its X handle on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.Justice Daniel Osiagor, on Monday, May 5, 2026, granted an interim injunction ordering the NBC to suspend the implementation of its “Formal Notice” issued on May 2, pending the hearing of the substantive suit.
The matter has been adjourned to June 1, 2026.The NBC directive had threatened sanctions against broadcast stations and presenters for allegedly presenting personal opinions as facts, intimidating or bullying guests, or failing to maintain neutrality in programmes.
Amnesty criticised the notice as vague, overly broad, and open to abuse, warning that its enforcement would create a chilling effect on the media and silence critical voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The ruling by Justice Daniel Osiagor marks an important step toward protecting freedom of expression and media independence in Nigeria,” the statement said.
While hailing the interim relief, Amnesty cautioned that the order is not a final judgment and urged the NBC to fully withdraw the directive to prevent further threats to press freedom.
“Amnesty International Nigeria calls on the NBC to withdraw the ‘Formal Notice’ in full and refrain from enforcing similar measures that undermine constitutional and international guarantees of freedom of expression,” it added.
The rights group further called on Nigerian authorities to allow journalists and broadcasters to perform their duties without intimidation or undue regulatory interference.

She said Oduko’s success showed that true achievement was not a product of chance but of diligence, perseverance and steadfast faith in God.

Senate okays Yuguda acting in full capacity as AMCON Board chairman
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).
The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Lamido Yuguda Abubakar as Chairman of the Board of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).
Abiru, during the presentation of the report, urged the Senate to consider and approve the nomination of Yuguda for appointment as chairman of the AMCON board.
The development followed a request by President Bola Tinubu seeking the screening and confirmation of Yuguda’s appointment.
The President’s request was contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on July 8.

311 lawmakers say “YES!” to establish state police
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, disclosed that 35 lawmakers participated in the voting virtually, while 276 members were physically present in the chamber.
311 lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Thursday voted in favour of the proposed constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police services.
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services and for Related Matters (HB. 2797),” seeks to amend the Constitution to create a legal framework for the establishment of state police services.
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, disclosed that 35 lawmakers participated in the voting virtually, while 276 members were physically present in the chamber.
The passage followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, during plenary.
President Bola Tinubu recently transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, to the House of Representatives.
