Impeachment: Ogun Assembly ratifies impeachment of Oluomo, swears in Elemide as New Speaker

The Ogun House of Assembly on Tuesday ratified the impeachment of Olakunle Oluomo as the speaker with all 22 member’s present at plenary voted in support of the impeachment.

At the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi, Musefiu Lamidi read the report of the committee set up by the House on Monday to investigate the allegations leveled against Oluomo.

Lamidi noted that the committee made it clear to the former speaker that the committee was not on witch-hunting mission but for fair hearing on allegations leveled against him.

Lamidi, however, said that the committee found him guilty of all allegations leveled against him and consequently recommended that he should be impeached.

Lamidi, thereafter moved the motion for the adoption of the report which was seconded by Oluseun Adesanya

The deputy speaker threw the resolution back to the house which the 22 members in attendance affirmed the removal of Oluomo as the speaker through the majority vote.

Mr Adegoke Adeyanju thereafter, nominated Oludaisi Elemide as new speaker and seconded by Adeniran Ademola.

Elemide took Oath of Office and officially sworn-in to replace the impeached Speaker.

The new speaker promised all inclusive leadership, urging the members to see themselves as one and work in unity for the progress of the state.

The High Court Judge abducted in Kebbi State one week ago, Hon. Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, has regained his freedom.

A family member confirmed the release to our correspondent on Monday, saying the judge arrived home a few hours ago.

According to the family member, relatives are jubilant and full of gratitude to God for the safe return of the abducted judge. He said the family expressed appreciation to all those who stood by them during the ordeal.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kebbi State Judiciary and security agencies had not released an official statement.

Justice Bunza’s abduction last week drew widespread concern across the state, with calls for his immediate and safe release.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos following an incident that prompted an earlier advisory.

Preliminary findings show that the smoke observed in the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The cause of the system’s activation is still under investigation.
