Colombia forward Campaz flees over death threats
The Colombian Football Federation has since condemned the threats against Campaz and called on the country’s Attorney General’s Office to investigate those responsible.

Colombia forward Jaminton Campaz has reportedly gone into hiding after receiving death threats following his team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The threats have revived memories of the killing of Andrés Escobar, who was shot dead in Medellin days after scoring an own goal during Colombia’s 1994 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States.
Campaz blazed an open chance over the crossbar in the final six minutes of extra time in the round of 16 game against Switzerland on July 7, with the game ending goalless after 120 minutes. Switzerland eventually progressed with a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout, ending Colombia’s World Cup campaign.
According to the New York Post, the 26 year old did not travel back to Bogotá with teammates James Rodríguez, Davinson Sánchez and Juan Fernando Quintero, as his whereabouts remain unknown, although speculation suggests he may have travelled to Argentina, where he plays for Rosario Central.
Amid growing concern over his safety, the Colombian international broke his silence in an emotional message posted on Instagram on Friday, urging fans to reject hatred and violence.
“My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may think differently or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear,” he wrote in Spanish translated to English.
Campaz said representing Colombia at the World Cup had fulfilled a lifelong dream despite the team’s painful exit.
“Since I was a child, I dreamed of defending Colombia’s colours, hearing the anthem, representing millions of people and scoring a goal at a World Cup. Today, I can only thank God for allowing me to fulfil that dream,” he said.
“I deeply regret not being able to bring you the joy we all hoped for, but I want you to know there was never a lack of dedication, commitment or love for this jersey. I gave everything I had on the pitch, and I would do it a thousand times over for my country.
According to the Athletic, the Colombian Football Federation has since condemned the threats against Campaz and called on the country’s Attorney General’s Office to investigate those responsible.

UEFA Considers World Cup Boycott Over FIFA’s $20bn Investment Proposal
UEFA strongly opposed the proposal, insisting football “isn’t FIFA’s to sell” and criticising the lack of transparency surrounding the plan.
UEFA is preparing an emergency meeting of its 55 member associations to discuss FIFA’s proposed $20 billion private investment plan, with a potential World Cup boycott among the options being considered.
The proposal, unveiled by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, would create the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new subsidiary responsible for the commercial and event operations of FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups.
FIFA said the venture would seek minority investment while retaining full control of football governance, with funds intended to expand development programmes for its 211 member associations.
UEFA strongly opposed the proposal, insisting football “isn’t FIFA’s to sell” and criticising the lack of transparency surrounding the plan.
Sources told ESPN there is significant resistance within the European governing body.

The grandson of former Ugandan president Idi Amin saw his bid for Commonwealth boxing gold end in disgrace as Aziz Abdul was disqualified for a headbutt in his quarter-final on Wednesday.
Amin famously declared himself the “King of Scotland” in 1976, having developed a fascination with the country with his remark inspiring an Oscar-winning film, “The Last King Of Scotland”.
Aziz arrived in Glasgow declaring his dream of becoming “the new king of Scotland.
But he was jeered out of the ring after a tempestuous bout against England’s Damar Thomas in the super-heavyweight division.
Despite landing three sweeping left hooks in the opening round, a short, stabbing left by Thomas earned a plainly displeased Aziz a standing count.
Aziz swung wildly throughout the second and was deducted his second point for persistently punching Thomas in the face as they exited a clinch.

Spanish giants Real Madrid said Tuesday they generated a record 1.221 billion euros ($1.39 billion) in revenue in the 2025/2026 season, despite failing to win a trophy.
“Operating revenue, excluding income from player transfers, reached €1.221 billion, 3.1 percent more than in the previous financial year,” said Los Blancos in a statement.
“Real Madrid has therefore exceeded the €1.2 billion mark for the first time, a figure that no other sports organisation in the world has achieved to date, consolidating the club’s position as the revenue leader in the sports industry.”
Madrid said they made 26 million euros ($30m) profit after tax, up by 8 percent on the earnings from 2024/25.
