Legendary country singer, songwriter and actor Dolly Parton, known for such chart-topping hits as “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” died Tuesday at the age of 80, according to a social media video announcement by her nephew Brian Seaver.

Parton, who had many hits on the country charts and on the Billboard Hot 100, was also a celebrated actress, starring in “9 to 5” alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, “Rhinestone” alongside Sylvester Stallone and in 1989’s “Steel Magnolias,” which won a People’s Choice Award in 1990.

Among Parton’s accolades include 10 Grammys, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Emmy, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She sold over 100 million records worldwide, according to her website, and worked with artists such as Willie Nelson, Miley Cyrus, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and, to great success, Kenny Rogers.
In recent years, Parton had been renowned for her philanthropy, using her net worth to promote literacy throughout poorer sections of the United States, including through proliferate book-giving and donations through the Dollywood Foundation and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. She was recently reported to have given away her 100 millionth book to the Library of Congress.

“Inspiring kids to love to read became my mission. In the beginning, my hope was simply to inspire the children in my home county, but here we are today with a worldwide program that gives a book a month to well over 3 million children,” Parton said of the library’s mission.

“Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Daddy,” she said.

Olu Jacobs: His Life and Times

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, known professionally as Olu Jacobs (and affectionately as “Uncle Olu”), is one of Nigeria’s most respected and influential actors. Born on 11 July 1942 to Yoruba parents from Egba Alake (Abeokuta, Ogun State), he spent much of his early childhood in Kano. There he attended Holy Trinity School, where he joined the debating and drama societies. A formative moment came when he watched one of Hubert Ogunde’s travelling theatre performances at the Colonial Hotel in Kano; the experience convinced him that acting was his path.

His father strongly opposed the idea of acting as a career and tore up his application form for further studies abroad. With help from his elder brothers, Jacobs obtained a visa and left for England, training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He later reflected that he never saw his father again after that departure.

Early Career Abroad

After training, Jacobs built a solid career in British theatre and television during the 1970s. He appeared in series including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, The Tomorrow People, 1990, and The Professionals. On stage he played President Mageeba in Tom Stoppard’s Night and Day (1978). In the 1980s he moved into international cinema, taking roles in Ashanti (1979), John Irvin’s The Dogs of War (1980, as a customs officer opposite Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger), Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985, as Col. Nsogbu), and Roman Polanski’s Pirates (1986, as Boomako). He also appeared in the children’s series The Witches and the Grinnygog.

Return to Nigeria and Nollywood

Jacobs returned to Nigeria around 1990 and starred as Inspector Best Idafa in the NTA detective series The Third Eye. He arrived just as the home-video boom that became Nollywood was taking shape. With classical training, a distinctive deep baritone, commanding presence, and professional discipline, he quickly became a pillar of the industry. He has appeared in well over 120 (some accounts say 200+) Nigerian films, frequently cast as kings, chiefs, elders, politicians, businessmen, or stern but principled fathers.

Notable Nollywood titles include:

  • Eye of the Gods (2004)
  • Lonely Heart / Dancing Heart (for which he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007)
  • Forest of Tears
  • Adesuwa (2012)
  • Potomanto (2013)
  • Dry (2014)
  • Oloibiri (2015)
  • The Royal Hibiscus Hotel (2017, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival)

He was especially known for regal “Igwe” or traditional-ruler roles in films such as The Kingmaker, Royal Doom, Royal Destiny, and Throne of Tears.

Personal Life and Mentorship

In 1989 Jacobs married fellow actress Joke Silva (they had met earlier while working on stage). The couple founded the Lufodo Group, which includes production and distribution arms and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, through which they have trained many younger practitioners. They have two surviving sons, Olusoji and Olugbenga (a daughter, Dayo, died young). Jacobs has long insisted that Silva retain her professional name, stating that she remains her own individual.

In recent years Jacobs has lived with Lewy body dementia (publicly confirmed by his wife around 2021). False death rumours have circulated periodically; his family has repeatedly confirmed he is alive, most recently in 2024. As of 2026 he is 84.

Awards and Recognition

  • Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (2007, Dancing Heart)
  • Industry Merit Award, Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (2013)
  • Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), 2011
  • Lifetime Achievement Award, Africa Movie Academy Awards (2016)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award, Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF, 2021)

Impact on the Nigerian Film Industry

Olu Jacobs is widely regarded as one of the “godfathers” of Nollywood (alongside figures such as Pete Edochie). His classical training and international experience raised professional standards at a time when the industry was still finding its feet. He brought gravitas, restraint, and emotional depth to roles that might otherwise have been one-dimensional, helping to legitimise Nigerian screen storytelling both at home and abroad.

He served as a living bridge between the older theatre generation (Ogunde and others) and the video-era stars who followed. Younger actors have repeatedly cited his discipline, preparation, and generosity as models. Through the Lufodo Academy and direct mentorship, he and Silva invested in the next generation of talent. His body of work demonstrated that African stories could be told with dignity, complexity, and technical craft, contributing to Nollywood’s growth into one of the world’s largest film industries by volume.

In short, Olu Jacobs’ career spans more than five decades, from British television and international cinema to the heart of Nollywood. He remains an enduring symbol of excellence, professionalism, and cultural contribution in Nigerian—and African—film.
