A coalition of leaders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are calling for swift removal of Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and from President Tinubu’s cabinet.

The coalition comprises the APC Leaders Forum (ALF) and the Tinubu/Shettima Solidarity Movement (TSSM), made the call a strongly worded open letter to Mr President, calling for Wike’s immediate removal urging the President to demonstrate that no individual is above the party or the country, even as they reaffirmed their support for Tinubu’s leadership and re-election bid.

In the open letter dated 7 January 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu through the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the groups are citing insubordination, anti-party activities, and threats to national unity.

They are accusing Wike of actions they described as incompatible with his continued stay in the cabinet of an APC-led government.

The letter, jointly signed by leaders of the two groups, was made public on Wednesday as members staged a peaceful rally at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

The groups said the rally was part of a broader mobilisation to “defend party integrity, democratic values and the Renewed Hope Agenda” of the Tinubu administration.

The signatories—Dr. Emeka Okoro, Dr. Adekunle Balogun, Ibrahim Yusuf, and Abdulkareem Isiaka—who described themselves as loyal supporters of President Tinubu, said their decision to speak out was driven by what they termed “egregious misconduct” by the former Rivers State governor, warning that silence could endanger party unity and national stability.

Central to their grievances were allegations that Wike, who is not formally registered as a member of the APC, had launched sustained attacks on the party’s national leadership.

They cited remarks allegedly made by Wike during a visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State on 5 January 2026, where he reportedly accused the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, of interfering in Rivers politics for personal gain.

The coalition also accused Wike of working against the APC-led government in Rivers State, alleging that he had persistently attacked Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whom they described as the party’s duly elected governor in the state. They claimed Wike had publicly ridiculed Fubara’s leadership, questioned the legitimacy of his emergence, and openly suggested that his election should be reversed in 2027.

“As a serving minister in an APC-led government, Wike’s actions amount to anti-party activities that weaken our hold on Rivers State—a key battleground for the APC’s future electoral success. How can we trust a man who actively works against our own governor while enjoying the privileges of your administration?”

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has predicted victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in next year’s presidential election asserting, ” No force can defeat Tinubu in 2027.”

Umahi made the declaration on Friday while opening the completed 15 kilometres section of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

He emphasised that president Tinubu has done extremely well and will be re-elected at the poll despite the coming together of the opposition elements.

He said that the president inherited a bad economy, which he is fixing, especially the micro economy and that the macro economy of the nation was breathing very well under his administration.

“When you talk about fuel economy and so on and so forth, a strategic meeting was held yesterday on how to handle the unfortunate incident of the Iran war, which has brought hardship on our people, so, the president is not asleep on this,” he said.

He urged the people of South-East to be strategic and support Tinubu’s re-election as according to him, the president has done so much for the zone more than any other administration in the county.

The Labour Party has notified the INEC that it will hold its Presidential primary on April 28, State congresses for April 25, Local Government Area and Ward congresses for April 24 and April 23, respectively.

The notice is contained in a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Sen. Nenadi Usman and released to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

Usman said that the letter is to notify the Commission of the approved schedule of activities for the Labour Party 2026 Elective Ward, Local Government Area (LGA), and State Congresses, as well as the National Convention.

She said that the letter was in pursuant to the provisions of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended);

The INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, and Section 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The interim national chairman said that the section mandated political parties to duly inform the commission of their congresses, conventions, and meetings.

INEC Dismisses Calls for Chairman’s Removal

….Defends Compliance with Court of Appeal Judgment on ADC Crisis

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly rejected calls for the removal of its Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, describing them as a distraction and an assault on the commission’s constitutional independence.

In a strongly worded press release issued on Wednesday, INEC clarified that the Chairman’s appointment, tenure, and removal are strictly governed by Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and not subject to the whims of any political party or interest group.

The commission’s reaction follows public statements by some political actors accusing INEC of partisan bias over its decision to comply with a recent Court of Appeal judgment concerning the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

INEC explained that it chose to obey the appellate court’s ruling to avoid a repeat of the situations in Zamfara and Plateau states, where elected officials were removed by election tribunals due to disobedience of court judgments.

The commission further stated that proceeding to monitor the congress and convention of the David Mark-led ADC faction would have amounted to disobeying a preservative order of the Federal High Court, which restrained INEC from taking any steps that could render pending processes nugatory. The matter, according to INEC, is currently before the court for accelerated hearing.

“Section 287(2) of the 1999 Constitution mandates every person and authority in Nigeria to obey and enforce judgments of the Court of Appeal,” the release emphasised.

INEC also addressed allegations of undermining the multi-party system, pointing out that under Professor Amupitan’s leadership, it has registered and recognised three new political parties — the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and National Democratic Party (NDP) — bringing the total number of active political parties in Nigeria to 22.

The commission described this as “an empirical rebuttal to any claim of a one-party agenda,” insisting it remains a neutral regulator rather than a participant in political competition.

On updates to party leadership records, INEC said its actions are guided solely by subsisting court orders and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, and it would not allow itself to be drawn into internal party conflicts.

Voter Revalidation Exercise Not Politically Motivated

INEC also moved to dispel what it called misconceptions surrounding the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise.

The commission clarified that the decision to revalidate the voters’ register predates the appointment of Professor Amupitan and is a professional necessity aimed at sanitising the National Register of Voters, which currently contains data from 2011 to 2024.

The exercise, which is not a fresh registration but an administrative audit, seeks to address issues such as transfers, multiple registrations, and deceased persons. It will be conducted in phases across all local government areas and polling units, with digital options for ease of access.

INEC stressed that the revalidation is uniform and transparent, and “not targeted at any region, party, or demographic.”

Focus on Upcoming Off-Cycle Elections

The electoral body said it remains focused on conducting credible off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti State in June 2026 and Osun State in August 2026, and would not be distracted by unfounded allegations of bias or collusion.

“Our allegiance remains solely to the Constitution and the will of the Nigerian people,” the statement declared.

INEC reiterated its commitment to free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, describing calls for Professor Amupitan’s resignation as misplaced.

The press release was e-signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman.
