Cholera: WHO says 307,433 cases recorded in 7 months
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported significant cholera activity for the period from January 1 to July 28, 2024, with a total of 307,433 cases and 2,326 deaths across 26 countries and five WHO regions.
The Eastern Mediterranean Region has experienced the highest incidence, followed by the African, South-East Asia, Region of the Americas, and European Regions.
Notably, no outbreaks have been reported in the Western Pacific Region during this timeframe.
The WHO has highlighted a critical shortage of Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV), as demand far exceeds supply. Since January 2023, 105 million doses have been requested by 18 countries, nearly double the 55 million doses produced. This shortage continues to hinder the global response to cholera.
In January 2023, the WHO classified the global resurgence of cholera as a grade 3 emergency—the highest internal level for emergencies.
The organization has indicated that, due to the high number of outbreaks, their geographic spread, and the ongoing shortage of vaccines and other resources, the global risk level remains very high and the situation continues to be classified as a grade 3 emergency.

BREAKING: NCDC Flags 2 New Suspected Ebola Cases in North-East
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported two new suspected cases of Ebola virus disease in the country’s North-East region.
In an update released on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the agency said the two individuals have been isolated. Contact identification and listing are ongoing, and laboratory testing is underway to confirm or rule out the infection.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the NCDC stated. The agency advised the public to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation, and follow guidance from public health authorities. Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.
The development comes after Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade on October 20. That case involved a 42-year-old woman who had travelled from Uganda to Abuja and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. She was later medically evacuated to Switzerland along with her husband.
Health authorities continue to monitor contacts linked to the earlier confirmed case while strengthening surveillance nationwide.

Pate assured Nigerians that public health measures remain in place to contain the virus and urged citizens to stay vigilant while relying only on credible information.
