Living wage should be N615K – Ajaero

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has advocated for a living wage of N615,000 for workers. He made this statement during an interview on Channels Television. Ajaero argued that the current wage increase announced by the Federal Government, ranging between 25 per cent and 35 per cent, was inadequate and misleading.

According to Ajaero, the last minimum wage of N30,000 expired on April 18, and discussions for a new minimum wage were supposed to have been concluded. However, the federal government failed to reconvene the meeting, leaving the issue unresolved.

He criticized the government’s announcement of a wage increase, stating that it was mischievous because there was no substantial increase being announced. Ajaero revealed that the Organised Labour has agreed on N615,000 as the living wage for civil servants, designed to cover basic necessities and prevent workers from living in poverty.

Breaking down the proposed living wage, Ajaero outlined various components, including housing and accommodation (N40,000), electricity (N20,000), utilities (N10,000), kerosene and gas (N25,000 to N35,000), food for a family of six (N270,000), medical expenses (N50,000), clothing (N20,000), education (N50,000), and sanitation (N10,000). Transportation costs, due to workers residing in remote areas and the high price of petrol, contributed significantly to the total, amounting to N110,000.

He invited further scrutiny of these figures, emphasizing that the proposed living wage was aimed at ensuring workers’ basic needs were met without plunging them into poverty or requiring them to borrow money to sustain themselves.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured residents that the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge will be opened to the public before Christmas, despite missing its earlier September completion target.

The governor gave the assurance on Sunday, October 25, 2026, during an inspection of the project to assess progress and determine the reasons for the delay. He said the distinctive steel superstructure on the bridge is about 80 per cent complete.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the complex architectural design — inspired by the area’s traditional cane-weaving heritage — involves installing more than 300 tonnes of steel at heights of up to 25 metres.

Three of the four major steel components have been completed, with work ongoing on the remaining one. LED lighting featuring the colours of Lagos State will also be installed to give the structure an iconic appearance.

He emphasised that the state government prioritises engineering quality and public safety over speed. Additional finishing works, including site cleaning, kerb repainting, restoration of affected areas and landscaping, will be carried out before the bridge opens.

The link bridge, which connects Opebi, Mende and Ojota, is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide an alternative route for motorists in the Ikeja, Maryland and surrounding corridors.
