A University of Jos student identified as Julius Nember, is fighting for his life in hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by a female neighbour.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Friday morning, January 12, 2024.

Trouble started after the suspect, also a UNIJOS student, claimed that Julius and his friend were making noise and locked Julius and his friend in his room with a padlock from outside.

The prime suspect

Recall that students of UNIJOS are currently writing their second semester examination for the 2022/2023 academic session.

While Miss Paksohot from Chip Ward in Pankshin Local Government Area of
Plateau State, is a 300 Level female student of English in UNIJOS Faculty of Arts, Nember, her co-tenant and 200 Level student of Library Science in Faculty of Education, hails from Mbakor, Tarka LGA, Benue State.

The Victim

The Senior Deputy Registrar (Information and Publications) in UNIJOS, Abdullahi Abdullahi and Head, Department of English, Prof. Jeff Doki, confirmed the attack to Arise News, saying the culprit has been arrested by security agencies.

“Yes, it’s true. But I can’t give you more details because this is a police matter. The student has been arrested by the police”, Abdullahi stated.

Doki, a Professor of Comparative Literature shed more light on the incident in an interview with our Correspondent.

He said, “Trouble started when Miss Tangsan was reading for her next morning’s exam ENG 322: Research Methods. Her next door neighbor, Julius and his friends were playing music with a cacophony that was not conducive for reading. Angered by this distraction, Miss Tangsan picked up her own padlock and locked Julius with all his male friends inside Julius ‘s room.

“When the protest from Julius and his inmates was drawing the attention of their concerned neighbors, Miss Tangsan sent her friend with the key to liberate them. When eventually they got their freedom, Julius and his friends accosted Miss Tangsan in her room demanding an explanation for their sudden imprisonment without trial. Angered for a second time, Miss Tangsan picked up her cooking knife and stabbed Julius right on the chest.

“Julius was later taken to a second rate medical personnel where the wounds were stitched up. But Julius had bled both externally and internally. He also lost a gargantuan amount of blood. By the time Julius’ friends and relations invited the police on Friday January 12 2024, his condition became worse. He almost collapsed at Katako police station and would have died if not for the professional expertise of medical Doctors at Jankwanu Hospital also known as Bingham Teaching Hospital.

The Victim

“Julius’ first surgery alone yesterday (Friday) was N300,000. Together, with the Nigerian Police, the University Chief Security Officer and Exco members of NASELS (National Association of English and Literary Studies Students) and FASA (Faculty of Arts Students’ Association), we followed this incident with diligence and great concern.

“Let me put it on record that the Students’ Union body especially NASELS and FASA made immense financial contributions to Julius’ family.
As they say information is power. It is only proper that colleagues should be properly informed so that they can make informed comments, suggestions and decisions.”
