Samson Nwaubani, a Nigerian based in Vietnam, was fatally stabbed during a communal clash between the Okwu and Umuajata communities in Umuahia, Abia State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 27, amid the annual New Yam festival held in Olokoro, the location of both communities.

Tensions had been escalating before the festival after a confrontation between residents of the two communities turned violent. The situation worsened when youths from Okwu reportedly attacked Umuajata, damaging properties.

On the day of the festival, Samson and some youths from Okwu were passing through Umuajata on their way to the celebration when they were ambushed by suspected Umuajata youths, leading to a violent clash. During the fight, Samson was stabbed in the neck and macheted on the arm, bleeding to death at the scene.

Sources revealed that the New Yam festival is celebrated in phases and the violence erupted during one of these events. Despite early intervention by community elders to resolve the dispute and prevent escalation, the conflict persisted, resulting in injuries alongside Samson’s death.

In response to the rising violence, the Umuahia South Local Government Area suspended the masquerader activities linked to the festival. This followed an emergency peace and security meeting convened by the Executive Mayor, Chinedu Enwereuzo, traditional rulers, security officials, and stakeholders.

A statement from the council indicated the suspension of the Igba Ekpe masquerade festivities until further notice due to concerns over security risks tied to the celebrations. Community leaders and youth groups were directed to ensure compliance, with warnings of legal action for violations. The suspension aims to maintain cultural identity through safe, lawful means while addressing security concerns.

Mayor Enwereuzo called for peace and unity, particularly in the Okwu and Umuajata communities, emphasizing that the safety of lives and property is a top priority.

Attempts to reach the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered at the time of reporting.
