Nigeria @64: A Look Back on 25 Years of Democracy

Nigeria started practicing “democracy”, barley 25 years ago.
Abraham Lincoln described democracy in his famous Gettysburg Address in 1863, as “a government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
Nigeria was ruled by military regimes from 1966 to 1999 (33 years).
The country transitioned to democratic system of governance in 1999, with the election of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Today, Nigeria is a federal republic with 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Ohibaba.com, profiles that from 1999 – 2024, Nigeria has had five democratically elected presidents. Here’s the list:
1. Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007) was the first president after Nigeria’s transition to democracy.
He is also the only Nigerian to have ruled twice as a military Head of State and later as a civilian president.
2. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (2007-2010) focused on improving infrastructure, tackling corruption, and promoting peace and stability in the Niger Delta region during his tenure.
3. Goodluck Jonathan (2010-2015) initially assumed office as Acting President following Yar’Adua’s death and later became president in his own right.
4. Muhammadu Buhari (2015-2023) addressed Nigeria’s economic difficulties, insecurity, and corruption during his leadership .
5. Bola Ahmed Tinubu (2023-present) is the current president of Nigeria, sworn in on May 29, 2023.

Death toll from Adamawa flood increases to 29

The death toll after the flood that hit Adamawa State capital about 10 days ago has been put at 29.
The Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta gave the update on Tuesday, in Yola when the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu provided support for affected residents.
Kaletapwa, who represented Governor Ahmadu Fintiri during the symbolic distribution of the cash and other relief items to the flood victims, said the latest assessment of the effects of the July 27, 2025 floods showed, by Monday August 4, that 29 people in total had died as a result of the flood.
The flood in view had swept through communities in Yola South, one of the two local government areas constituting the twin Yola capital territory, and has come to be seen as one of the worst floods that have been recorded in the capital city in recent times.
Farauta, who said the state government had done much on its own to help the victims of the flood, thanked Remi Tinubu for intervening.

Popular Broadcaster, Morayo Afolabi-Brown Resigns from TVC

Popular broadcaster and host of Your View, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has officially resigned from TVC Communications after 12 years of service.
Her departure was confirmed in a statement issued by Edward Akintara, Manager of PR, Corporate Communications & Marketing at TVC.
According to the statement, her final working day will be Thursday, August 29, 2025.
Morayo, who also serves as the Managing Director of TVC Entertainment, is stepping down to pursue a long-held personal passion.
“We celebrate her for the incredible impact she has made, not only on Your View, but also to millions of viewers across Nigeria and beyond,” the statement read.
Describing her resignation as a significant moment for the station, TVC assured viewers that Your View will continue with the same standard of excellence.
“Morayo will be dearly missed, however, the show remains strong and will continue to deliver the quality and relevance our audience has come to expect,” the company added.
TVC expressed gratitude for her years of dedication and service, praising her as a “source of inspiration” and a key contributor to the network’s success in daytime programming.
“Her legacy at TVC Communications will endure, and she will always remain a cherished member of the TVC family,” the statement concluded.
