Appeal Court sacks Enugu PDP Rep, returns Agbo of Labour Party
The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu, on Wednesday, upheld the ruling of the House of Representatives tribunal that sacked the member representing Igboeze North/Udenu federal constituency, Hon. Simon Atigwe.
The appellate court rather returned the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Hon Dennis Nnamdi Agbo who was declared winner in the February 25th 2023 National Assembly election and sworn in but was sacked for a re-run election that took place on February 3rd 2024.
The Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atigwe, was subsequently sworn in as the winner of the 2024 election, but Agbo’s petition to the second election tribunal filed against Atigwe was on Wednesday, consolidated by the Appeal Court and sent Atigwe packing from the House of Representatives.
The Appeal Court in delivering the judgement said that Atigwe of the PDP wasn’t duly elected by the valid votes cast in the rerun election and declared Dennis Agbo of the Labour Party as the rightful winner of the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared that the PDP’s candidate polled a total of 23,863 votes to defeat the Labour Party candidate who it said scored 23,226 votes.
Agbo of the LP who had earlier won the February 25th, 2023 election but was sacked by the appellate court proceeded to the tribunal to challenge Atigwe’s declaration, arguing that the election was marred by wrong computation of result, substantial non-compliance to the electoral act among others.
In their ruling on Wednesday, the Tribunal headed by Justice H N Kunaza said that the petition had merit and declared Hon. Dennis Nnamdi Agbo the actual winner of Igbo Eze North/ Udenu Federal constituency.
Justice Kunaza’s panel declared invalid, null and void the 2000 votes added to the PDP candidate and restored the votes of 25th February 2023 of 14,229 for the PDP and 28,870 for the LP candidate, Rt Hon Dennis Agbo.
It also held that Atigwe Simon Chukwuemeka of the PDP was not duly elected by the valid votes cast as the petitioner won with 23,221 and PDP 21,863 votes and as such, the certificate of return issued to Atigwe should be withdrawn and issued to Hon Agbo.

WAEC 2026 results: 1.2 million candidates pass English, Maths
A total of 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools enrolled for the examination across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.
The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, officially released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates.
Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, announced the results on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to him, a total of 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools enrolled for the examination across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.
Dr Dangut gave the breakdown of the results as follows: Of those who sat, 1,200,514 candidates — 61.54% — obtained credits and above in five subjects including English and Maths.
1,687,378 candidates — 86.50% — obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects with or without English and Maths.

CGC Adeniyi announces new changes to customs recruitment
The new system would enable unsuccessful applicants to know when the next recruitment exercise would take place instead of waiting for years without certainty.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, says henceforth the Service will conduct its recruitments exercise annually.

The CGC disclosed this during the release of the 2024/2025 recruitment exercises, announcing that 3,852 applicants were selected from 573,680 applications received nationwide.
He disclosed that the successful candidates were recruited into the Superintendent, Inspectorate and Customs Assistant cadres, with all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory represented.
Emphasising on the annual recruitment cycle, Adeniyi said “Recruitment will no longer be an occasional event undertaken every several years. It will be a standing, predictable, yearly process.”
According to him, the 2026 recruitment exercise will begin later this year and be concluded within the same calendar year, from advertisement to publication of the final list.
The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Dr. Matawalle described the decision as a landmark show of the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness of officers and men who continue to make sacrifices in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He disclosed that the salary review had been a priority since the inception of the administration and that he had personally championed the cause within government circles. The Minister thanked the President for his visionary leadership and steadfast support for the welfare of military personnel.
“It is a clear reflection of your passion for building a motivated, resilient, and highly professional Armed Forces capable of effectively addressing Nigeria’s security challenges,” Matawalle stated.
He noted that the approved increases range from 30 to 80 per cent and will benefit about 250,000 personnel. The new pay package takes effect from 1 September 2026.
According to the Minister, officers above the rank of Colonel — including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals — will receive a 30 per cent increase. Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will get a 50 per cent rise, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will benefit from an 80 per cent increase.
Matawalle said the decision forms part of the administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of troops involved in combating banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country. He quoted the President as saying that “the men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.”
The Minister added that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through the provision of weapons and technological tools.
He urged servicemen and women to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and sacrifices, expressing confidence that together they would prevail over those intent on undermining the nation.
