Maiduguri Flood: FG Donates N3bn Intervention Fund- Zulum

The Federal Government has donated N3 billion for the provisions of food items and other basic necessities to persons displaced by the Maiduguri flood.
The Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, disclosed this on Wednesday, at the Bakassi IDP camp along Biu, Damboa road in Maiduguri.
Prof Zulum said that
more than one million persons were displaced by the devastating floods in Maiduguri.
The governor revealed that as long-term measures, the government will constitute a health committee to look into possible outbreaks of diseases to curb the effects and spread of the diseases.
He said search and rescue have begun across affected communities to determine lives lost, while data collation of affected persons will be done immediately.
On the cause of the flood, the governor blames heavy terrestrial rainfall being experienced this year.
The governor said development has overtaken water channels across the state capital, thereby blocking water pathways.
He also blamed the flood on the overflow of Alo Dam which was caused by the release of water from other dams in Cameroon.
Prof Zulum said the Alo Dam will be reconstructed to contain more water volume, while structures erected on riverine and water proned areas will be demolished to avoid future recurrence.

Girl, 14, killed by lion in Kenya

A 14-year-old girl has been killed by a lion on the outskirts of Nairobi, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said.
The child was snatched from a residential compound on a ranch next to Nairobi National Park, according to the conservation agency.
The alarm was raised by another teenager and KWS rangers followed tracks to the nearby Mbagathi River, where they found the primary school girl’s remains.
The lion has not been found but KWS said it had set a trap and deployed search teams to look for the animal.

A four-storey building has collapsed in Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos, with occupants trapped, and some feared dead.
Panic gripped residents when the uncompleted building suddenly collapsed on Saturday.
The building houses the popular Equal Right Restaurant.
The incident happened at about 11a.m., today.
As of press time, men of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, as well as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, who had been contacted have arrived at the scene.

An unspecific number of people are believed to be trapped under an uncompleted storey building which collapsed in Lagos.
The building housing Equal Rights restaurant located at Oremeta Street, Ojodu Lagos, went down on Saturday morning.
It is believed, however, that some people are still trapped underneath the rubble.
