Lagos To Begin Response Against Wild Polio Virus Outbreaks
This comprehensive Outbreak Response (OBR) will take place from Saturday, January 18, to Tuesday, January 22, 2025.
Lagos State is poised to launch an aggressive Polio Outbreak Response across all 20 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas to uphold the nation’s polio-free status.
This comprehensive Outbreak Response (OBR) will take place from Saturday, January 18, to Tuesday, January 22, 2025.
Dr. Abimbola Bowale, the Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, announced this initiative during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja.
She emphasized that the entire country remains at risk of wild poliovirus reinfection, particularly following recent outbreaks of wild poliovirus type 1 in Malawi and Mozambique.
In addition, she highlighted the commencement of the Lagos State Government’s integrated Measles and Yellow Fever vaccination campaign, which began on October 19, 2024.
This Integrated Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIA) campaign serves as a significant public health initiative aimed at closing gaps in immunization coverage and controlling the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases within Lagos State.
“Our mission is clear: the health and safety of Lagosians is our top priority,” stated Dr. Bowale.
“To maintain our hard-earned polio-free status, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, will implement this Polio Outbreak Response across all LGAs and LCDAs.”
She firmly noted that this campaign is essential to “avert any potential setbacks to our significant accomplishments. If left unchecked, the virus poses a serious threat, and we must take decisive action to ensure the integrity of the country’s polio-free status.”
