Maiduguri Flood: UN Donates US$6m, WHO Moves Mobile Clinics into Camps
▪︎Governor Zulum with WHO Representative in Nigeria, Walter Mulombo.
The United Nations said on Sunday it is making $6 million available to the Borno state government for the provision of relief to persons affected by the recent flood in the state.
Similarly, the World Health Organisation (WHO) deployed four mobile clinics to IDP camps and provided essential medicines and medical supplies, including Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHKs) and malaria treatments, as part of its immediate response.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, announced this allocation when he led officials of the global agency and non-governmental organisations on a visit to the conflict-ridden Borno State and met with the government officials and the victims of the flooding.
He said the funding is necessitated by the urgent need to save lives, even as the organisations pledged immediate support for the affected population.
Mr Fall said the UN is responding to the crisis by providing hot meals, facilitating food airdrops in hard-to-reach areas cut off by flood waters, trucking water and providing water and sanitation hygiene services.
He said, “I witnessed firsthand the devastation and untold hardship caused by the flooding, including the destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure. I also saw the suffering of affected communities.”
The WHO Representative in Nigeria, Walter Mulombo, also said the agency is working to enhance the state’s capacity to rapidly detect and respond to disease outbreaks within the camps
Mr Mulombo pledged the organisation’s support to those affected while also expressing deep concern over the impact of the disaster on the lives of the affected population, especially the most vulnerable – women, children, and the elderly.

JUST IN: Explosion Rocks Tony Okocha-Led Rivers APC Secretariat As LG Poll Holds
Explosives destroyed buildings and others property at the Tony Okocha-led secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The gate of the secretariat and the doors were shattered by the explosion which happened Saturday morning while local government election is taking place in the state.
Gate of the secretariat dropped on the ground by the explosion
Chairman of the faction of APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha narrated how the incident happened.
“About 3:20am some gun-trotting young men with their explosives and all that, came here and dropped the first explosive, maybe because the one they dropped here did not detonate, they came back the second time to burn the structure – look at the security house is gone.
“Behind me you will see that there was also an attempt, our people came and we were able to quench the fire,” Okocha said.
Windows shattered by the explosives
He alleged that the incident was politically motivated and blamed the governor, Siminalayi Fubara, whom he said had earlier declared war over the local government election.
“Is APC secretariat here any voting unit?
There is no voting unit here.
So, it was deliberate to see how they can annihilate us, it is deliberate to see how they can embarrass us, it is deliberate to see how they can decimate us,” Okocha said.Amid controversies surrounding the Rivers local government poll, accreditation and voting has started in many polling centres around Port Harcourt City.
