Biden: Why I agree to step down from the presidential race
President Joe Biden has revealed that he was not angry at all the people who said he should step down from the 2024 United States presidential race, adding that his love for his country and the need to preserve democracy convinced him to step down, CBS News reports.
In July, under increasing pressure to step aside as the nominee after a disastrous debate in June against former President Donald Trump, Mr Biden acquiesced and announced he would give up the nomination and endorse Harris.
Biden took the stage on the first night of the Democratic National Convention for the last time as president — or as a candidate for the presidency — to cite the accomplishments of his single presidential term and the threat to democracy as the reasons his vice, Kamala Harris, should succeed him as president.
“It’s been the honour of my lifetime to serve as your president,” Mr. Biden said in a speech that capped over five decades in office as senator, vice president, and president. “I love the job, but I love my country more.
All this talk about how I’m angry at all those people who said I should step down — that’s not true. I love my country more, and we need to preserve our democracy in 2024.”
He received a thunderous standing ovation from the crowd and took a moment to wipe his eyes after his daughter, Ashley, introduced him.
It took several minutes for the crowd to quiet, and his speech was interrupted at times by chants of, “We love Joe!” The party faithful filling the Chicago arena held up signs that said, “We Joe.”
Five months ago, President Biden clinched the Democratic nomination and had been expected to be the one receiving the mantle of Democratic nominee for the second time.
Instead, he asked the crowd, “Are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as president and vice president of the United States?”
The president joked that he was too young to begin work in the Senate, elected at 29, and “too old” to remain as president.
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you,” he said.

PDP govs lose as NWC hands Wike Rivers control
The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has solidified his position in the Peoples Democratic Party leadership crisis as the National Working Committee endorsed the Rivers State congresses.
Wike’s loyalists within the PDP NWC not only secured the approval but also postponed the National Executive Committee meeting, originally set for September 26, to October 24, which could have overturned the decision.
The PDP NWC, led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, made this decision during a meeting at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja on Thursday.
The NWC meeting had been delayed for the past three weeks amid rising tension within the party, especially between former Rivers State governor Wike and the PDP Governors Forum over the status of Rivers State party congresses.
The political conflict between Wike and current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, escalated on August 24 when PDP governors publicly backed Fubara.
PDP governors called for a review of the Rivers State Congresses and affirmed Fubara’s role as the leader of the PDP in the state.
This support for Fubara enraged Wike, who on August 31 threatened to create chaos in the governors’ states if they did not refrain from interfering in Rivers State matters.

Morka said new dates for the meetings would be communicated in due course.
The statement reads in part, “Members of the National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are hereby informed that the National Caucus and National Executive Committee meetings scheduled to be held on September 11 and 12, 2024, respectively, have been postponed.”

BREAKING:Supreme Court Affirms Ododo Kogi Gov
INEC had announced that Ododo polled a total of 446,237 votes to defeat Ajaka who came second with 259,052 votes.
The Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress, APC as the winner of the governorship election held in Kogi State on November 11.
This follows the dismissal of the appeal of Murtala Ajaka, a candidate of the SDP who faulted outcome of the election.
In a unanimous judgment today, the Apex Court upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal which on 27 May affirmed the election of Ododo.
The Apex Court panel said the allegation of substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act was not proven by the SDP governorship candidate. It further adds that allegations of age falsification and certificate forgery are pre-election matters, noting it’s the Federal High Court that has jurisdiction to hear such.
The Supreme Court therefore dismissed Ajaka’s appeal for lacking merit.
INEC had announced that Ododo polled a total of 446,237 votes to defeat Ajaka who came second with 259,052 votes.
